Ethical Guidelines that are Broken in Milgrams Study on Obedience The ethical guidelines suggest that debriefing the participants after the experiment is essential, which Milgram has done it thoroughly in order to reveal the aim and the true purpose of his study. Although he did not expect the out come of his research, but his ethics shows that the research is beneficial of understanding the welfare of World War II. However, it is unethical at some point of his research because he breaks the guidelines of deception and the right to non-participation. The assumptions are usually less significant to the actual observation results. Milgram asked a variety of people to guess how many people will obey in his experiment with the pressure and commands from an authority figure. Almost all participants have obeyed in his experiment, which is unexpected; since he and the majority of people think that the participants will not obey because of the commands that can harm someone. It is not his fault. Third problem is to get beneficial research. Sometimes psychologists have to get people to deceive or even do harmful things that are unethical. The participants are told to keep on giving in electric shocks to the learner by the authority figure due to obedience. They do not know that the learner is an actor who is screaming and groaning, which is actually pretending to be shocked. This leads to a clear reflection of how the World War II happens similarly to this research, whereas is beyond the limits of the ethical guidelines nowadays.
